A Zotero alternative for a group thesis

Zotero is a free, open-source reference manager: it collects sources, builds your bibliography and puts citations into Word and Google Docs. Knyte keeps the whole project, with the group’s reading, decisions, questions and plan, and lets the AI assistant you already use work from it. You can use both.

01The short answer

If references are what you need to keep in order, Zotero is a very good choice. It saves sources from the web with one click and puts citations and the bibliography straight into Word, LibreOffice and Google Docs. Knyte has no plugin for that.

If you also need to keep the group’s reading and decisions together, that’s what Knyte is built for: sources, decisions, open questions and the plan in one knyte, read by everyone in the group and by your AI assistants. Keep Zotero alongside it for the citations if you like.

03Using both

Knyte has no plugin for Word or Google Docs.

Zotero is good at the citations in your text, so keep it for those. Keep the sources, the reading, the decisions and the plan in the knyte. When you want the references in Zotero, download the knyte’s list as RIS or BibTeX, which Zotero can import.

Frequently asked questions

Can I move my Zotero library to Knyte?

Not automatically, because Knyte doesn’t import libraries. Upload the PDFs to the knyte, and Knyte looks up the reference details for you to confirm. The other way works: download the knyte’s references as RIS or BibTeX and import them into Zotero.

Can we share references in Zotero too?

Yes, in a group library. There’s no limit on how many members a group can have, and the owner chooses whether everyone or only admins can edit. Files in the group count against the owner’s storage, where 300 MB is free.

Can I cite in Word with Knyte?

Not with a plugin. Select a sentence in a PDF and choose Cite, and the author, year and page number come with it when you paste. You can copy the reference list with its italics and hanging indent, or download it as an RTF file for Word. If you want a bibliography built from the citations in your text, Zotero is the better fit.

Can my AI assistant read the references in Knyte?

Yes. Your assistant can read the knyte’s reference list in the style the group chose, and propose reference details. A proposal waits until someone in the group has used or declined it.

What does it cost?

Zotero is free. Synced files fit in 300 MB of free storage, and more costs from $20 a year. Knyte is free to start: one knyte of your own, two that others started and 100 MB of uploaded files. If you need more, Knyte Pro for one person in the group is enough, or a project pass for the knyte.
