AI in your thesis, when you write as a group

Most students writing a thesis today use AI in some way. Once there are two or more of you, a second question sits next to what the rules allow: how do you keep what the group decided apart from what a chatbot suggested?

01Rules

Ask your supervisor early.

Rules differ between universities and sometimes between courses. Read the course guidelines and ask your supervisor before you begin. Many places expect you to declare how AI was used, and that is easier if you note it as you go than if you try to reconstruct it afterwards.

02Sources

Read the source yourself before you cite it.

An AI assistant can invent references and page numbers that look entirely plausible. Check every source in the original, and save where in the text each claim appears, so that you can show it.

03Decisions

The group makes the decisions.

Scope, method and theory are for the group to settle. Write down each decision with the reasoning behind it. Your supervisor and your opponent at the thesis seminar are likely to ask about exactly that.

04Several assistants

One shared basis for everyone.

Four people with four different chats end up with four different pictures of the thesis. Decide where the group’s shared material lives, and let the assistants work from it instead of from whatever each person happens to paste in.

05Knyte

Where Knyte comes in.

Knyte gathers the group’s sources, decisions, questions and plan. You read the PDFs in Knyte with numbered paragraphs, and Knyte finds the reference details. The AI assistant each of you already uses reads the same knyte. Everything an assistant contributes is marked as the assistant’s and attributed to the person who used it, so it can be declared.

Frequently asked questions

Is using AI cheating?

Your university’s rules and your supervisor decide that. The safest approach is to use AI openly and be able to show how.

Does Knyte work if only one person in the group uses AI?

Yes. The others use the knyte without an assistant.

Does it work if I write on my own?

Yes. Then it is you and your AI sharing the same material.

What does it cost?

It’s free to start: one knyte of your own, two that others started and 100 MB of uploaded files. If you need more, Knyte Pro for one person in the group is enough, or a project pass for the knyte.
