A Gemini Notebook alternative for thesis work
Gemini Notebook, formerly NotebookLM, answers questions about the sources you upload. Knyte keeps what you or your group has read, decided and planned, and lets the AI assistant you already use work from it.

01The short answer
If you write alone, Gemini Notebook might be enough for asking questions about your sources. Knyte works for one person too: sources, notes, decisions and plan in one knyte, and your own assistant reads from there instead of from whatever you paste in that day.
If you write together, you need one place where the whole group’s reading and decisions live. That’s what Knyte is built for.
02Side by side
| Aspect | Gemini Notebook | Knyte |
|---|---|---|
| Built for | Questions and summaries over your sources. | A project, for one person or a group. |
| Decisions | In notes, like everything else. | A place of their own, with the reasoning, who decided and when. |
| AI assistant | Gemini, built in. | The one you already use, such as Claude or ChatGPT. |
| PDFs | Chat with your sources, with citations to places in them. | A reader with numbered paragraphs, citations to page and paragraph, and each PDF’s reference details. |
| Sharing | By email, as viewer or editor. School accounts may be limited to their own institution. | Everyone in the knyte sees the same thing. |
| What the AI writes | Answers, notes and reports in the notebook. | Marked as the assistant’s, and waits until someone in the group has reviewed it. |
| Price | Free, with higher limits on Google’s paid AI plans. | Free to start with a knyte of your own. A term pass or project pass when the group needs more. |
03Using both
Knyte doesn’t make audio overviews or flashcards.
Gemini Notebook is good at those. Use it for that, then put what you learn into the knyte so the rest of the group and your assistants see it.
Common questions
- Can I move my notebooks to Knyte?
- Not automatically. Upload the same PDFs to the knyte, several at once if you like, and write down the decisions you’ve already made.
- Does everyone in the group have to use the same AI?
- No. One person can use Claude and another ChatGPT. Both read the same knyte.
- Does Knyte work without AI?
- Yes. Sources, reading, decisions and the plan all work without anyone connecting an assistant.
- What does it cost?
- It’s free to start: one knyte of your own, two that others started and ten PDFs per knyte. If you need more, a term pass for one person in the group is enough, or a project pass for the knyte.
- Am I allowed to use AI in my thesis?
- Your university and supervisor decide that. Knyte marks everything an assistant contributed, so it’s clear what came from where.
