A Notion alternative for your thesis or group project
Notion is a flexible workspace with a free plan for students. Knyte is built for what a thesis rests on, meaning the sources you read and the decisions you take, and the AI assistant you already use reads from the same knyte.

01The short answer
If you write alone, Notion goes a long way. The student plan is free, you shape pages and databases the way you like, and there are plenty of templates to start from. Knyte is built for theses where sources, decisions and your AI assistant need to live in one place.
If you write together, Notion gives you pages that several people edit at once, and databases for tasks. On the student plan the workspace has one member and the others are guests. Knyte is built for the group’s reading and decisions: everyone in the knyte sees the same sources, and your assistants read them too.
02Side by side
| Aspect | Notion | Knyte |
|---|---|---|
| Built for | A general workspace for schoolwork and projects, made of pages and databases. | The thesis or group project: sources, decisions, questions and a plan in one place. |
| Structure | You shape pages and databases the way you like, with several views of the same data. There are wikis and a large range of templates, including for study planning. | The structure is already there: sources, decisions, tasks and a plan each have their own place. |
| PDFs | PDFs go in as files or are embedded on a page, and you can comment on them. Notion Agent can read PDFs and answer questions about them. | A reader with numbered paragraphs, highlights the whole group sees, and reference details found when the PDF is uploaded. |
| Decisions | Written on a page or in a database you set up yourselves, for instance with status and date. | A place of their own, with the reasoning, who decided and when. Assistants can’t change them. |
| AI assistant | Notion AI and Notion Agent are included in Business, while Free and Plus get a limited number of AI responses to try. Claude and ChatGPT can also connect to Notion through MCP. | The one you already use, such as Claude or ChatGPT. It reads the group’s sources, decisions and plan, and what it adds is marked as the assistant’s. |
| Sharing | The student plan has one member, and the others are invited as guests to individual pages. The Free plan with several members has a limit of 1,000 blocks. | Everyone you invite to the knyte sees the same thing. |
| Price | Free for students with a school email, which you confirm once a year. Paid plans cost per member. | Free to start with a knyte of your own. Knyte Pro or a project pass when the group needs more. |
03Using both
Keep using Notion for what you already do there.
The wiki, the templates and the planning can stay where they are. Put the thesis’s PDFs, reading and decisions in a knyte, and keep a link to it on your Notion page. Your assistants then read the same material you do.
Frequently asked questions
Is Notion free for students?
Yes. Notion has a free education plan for students and teachers with a school email. It is a workspace with one member, and once a year you confirm that you still have a valid school email. Notion’s pricing page describes it as the Plus plan with a one-member limit, where Notion AI is a limited trial. The conditions and which schools qualify are on Notion’s own pages and may change.
Can a group project run in Notion?
Yes, Notion itself says you can invite friends to collaborate on group projects. On the student plan one person holds the workspace and the others are invited to pages as guests, with the right to view, comment or edit. What differs is what is in place from the start: in a knyte the group has a PDF reader, reference details and a place for decisions.
Can I use Claude or ChatGPT with Notion?
Yes. Notion has an MCP connection that Claude and ChatGPT can use to read and write your pages, and they then work with your own permissions in Notion. In Knyte, everyone’s assistant reads the same knyte, and what they add is marked as the assistant’s and attributed to the person who used it.
Can I move my work from Notion to Knyte?
Not automatically. Upload the PDFs to the knyte, several at once if you like, and write down the decisions you’ve already made. Notes and planning can stay in Notion.
What does Knyte cost?
It’s free to start: one knyte of your own, two that others started and 100 MB of uploaded files. If you need more, Knyte Pro for one person in the group is enough, or a project pass for the knyte.
Give your thesis a knyte of its own.
Bring your sources and your group. Notion can stay alongside.
